In a resounding political and moral failure, the Head of Government did not stand by the citizen who is being scorched by the fires of rising prices. Instead, he chose to play the role of the “faithful advisor” to middlemen and speculators (the shennaqa), aligning himself with them in a manner that sparks both astonishment and resentment. Rather than directing his discourse toward protecting the citizen’s purchasing power, he was occupied with warning intermediaries about the risks of holding onto livestock until the last moment
His famous phrase, “Bring your sheep out for sale now before they lose value,” was not a mere passing slip of the tongue; it appeared to be a calculated stance carrying a clear bias. This call, while framed as advice, was inherently an attempt to rescue the profits of speculators. It came at a time when the citizen was waiting for market mechanisms to work in their favor and for prices to drop as the season reached its end
However, exactly the opposite occurred. It seemed as though the Head of Government was rushing to block any possibility of a price decrease, as if fearing that the simple citizen might benefit from a sheep at a reasonable price. This behavior reflects an inverted logic, hiding behind the phrase “this is what the citizen wants,” while the reality is quite the contrary. The citizen does indeed want lower prices, but they do not expect their Head of Government to warn monopolists about this decline or to guide them on how to avoid losses
The most dangerous aspect of this speech is not just its content, but the message it carries: that there are those who fear for the profits of middlemen more than they fear the suffering of the citizens. This is a striking precedent in the political landscape, where a government official appears to be defending the pockets of speculators instead of being a voice for those burdened by the cost of living
This contradiction becomes even clearer when considering the fuel file, where prices continue to rise, burning the pockets of citizens without any real intervention or tangible measures to curb them. This silence, contrasted with the swift action taken to protect the interests of specific groups, raises many questions about the priorities of public policies
Analysts have previously noted that the Head of Government masters the language of trade more than the art of politics, and that his presence in this position has not translated into decisions that serve the public good as much as it has reinforced a general sense of failure. In light of these indicators, a conviction is growing among broad sectors of society that the current government’s performance is among the weakest since independence—not only in terms of results but also in terms of biases that have become exposed for all to see
